Analysis of Communication Content on Bedside Rounds in a Hospital - Implications for Patient Centered Communication

Purpose: Few studies on bedside rounds have focused the principles of patient-centered communication (PCC). This study pursued three objectives. First, we investigated verbal contents from PCC perspective. Next, analyzed inpatient surveys concerning patients’ experience and perspective regarding rounds. Finally, identified which factors affect patient satisfaction levels.Methods: To evaluate doctor-patient communication, 151 patients (88 in medical wards 63 surgical wards) were using Roter Interaction Analysis System. An survey was also conducted to obtain further information about experience.Results: The average duration 71.3 seconds. distribution conversations between doctors significantly different, with accounting for 62% 38% total (p<.001). Both (44.7%) (40.5%) considered provision biomedical as most important aspect communication. On other hand, proportion psychological-social relatively low both groups, at 2.3% 4.2%, respectively. In survey, 40.8% respondents reported being uninformed ward round advance, while 44.7% stated that did not take place pre-informed time. While 66.7% participants felt interaction during sufficient, those who they had insufficient time least satisfied. There a positive correlation sufficiency overall (p<.01).Conclusion: findings this indicate neither nor adequately meet conditions centeredness.
